Devotion: A Day of Pushing Boulders

Psalm 37:5 – Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him, and He will act.

Someone asked me the other week how my day was going, and my immediate response was, “It’s a pushing boulders sort of day.” What I meant was that it was a day of making small, seemingly imperceptible adjustments while putting in a lot of effort. It was a good day; it was a hard day—one where I wasn’t sure if my work would make a huge impact, but I could trust that the Lord would decide the outcomes.

C.S. Lewis once said, “Isn’t it funny how day by day nothing changes, but when we look back, everything is different?”

I recently came across a document I wrote in 2019, outlining my vision for the next seven years at Waypoint as we onboarded a new staff member. In it, I listed three key goals I hoped this hire would accomplish. I had forgotten about the document’s existence, so I was surprised to see that all three goals had been met.

Tucked within that same document was a passing thought—an aspiration to “recruit a Young Life Church partner to build Waypoint’s youth ministry and release him after three years to go start his ministry.”

This summer, we will be celebrating and sending off Noah Satterfield—our Young Life Church Partner—who started in 2022, has grown our youth ministry and is now moving to Florida to begin his ministry as an ordained pastor. That goal was hit with a bullseye.

God’s faithfulness over the long haul astonishes me. It reminds me that, even on days when I feel like I’m just pushing boulders, I can rest in the assurance that these efforts are not in vain. The Lord is at work, accomplishing His good purposes through the small, faithful steps we take.

What boulders are you pushing today?
Teaching a toddler to be potty-trained? Preparing for another history quiz? Searching for meaningful work? Cold-calling potential clients? Attending another therapy session with your spouse?

How can you lean into the process and trust that the Lord will accomplish His outcomes?
