Rarely do I share the backstory of my drawings. They are often a moment of worship for me, and whatever you see or experience in them is secondary. But I want to share one thing about this piece.
I have not drawn for over 20 years. I have not had studio space for 24 years.
This summer, I built a shed and installed drywall so that I could try my hand at artmaking. In the process, I found this piece in my attic.
About a third of it had already been composed more than 20 years ago: the darkness across the bottom, built from graphite, oil stick, and black pastel.
This week, I returned to it and began adding the texture and color of the upper portion.
Only afterward did I realize what I had done. The darkness was painted twenty years before the light. So I have called this one John 1:5.
